President’s Message,

Happy New Year!  This is a wonderful time of year as well especially since there is not as much outdoor activity because of the cold.  Time to catch up on hobby projects and otherwise stay warm!

Be sure to attend the annual meeting held on January 14th at the Park Marina Events Center at 1800 Park Marina in the United Public Employees of California (UPEC) Conference Center.  We have two very interesting guest speakers:

Prof. Kaan Kurtural, Fresno State Univ. on “Canopy Management – what works and what doesn’t work.”

Prof. Jim Wolpert, UC Davis, “New winegrape varieties and their management.”

Following their very interesting presentations we will have a panel discussion from local growers with commentary from the university guru’s and a full agenda of board elections, and Association business.   Sort of catch up on the past and look into the future.  Please look forward to a full day of activities and fun.

We are looking for three board members!  Gary Venable is sticking with his intention to retire from the Board of Directors and Mike Jenkins is also stepping down from his seat on the board.  Please thank Gary and Mike for their service and dedication when you can!  Richard Gooch is intending to again run for a two-year term on the board and Donna Morris has agreed to also run for a board seat.  I know of one or two other SCVA members who are interested; but if you don’t mind serving on the Board of Directors and have an interest in promoting our Association and north state wines, please consider throwing your hat in the ring!  We meet as a board bi-monthly and keep in touch to remain current with projects and long range planning.  It does not take a lot of time to be a member and we always have something to talk about during meetings!

I’d like to cover a new event for SCVA participation in the 8th Annual Wine and Dine for the Park sponsored by Palo Cedro Community organization as a fund raising event for their park.  It is scheduled from 5 – 9 PM on March 31, 2012 so mark your calendars and plan to attend one of the finest wine tasting events of the year.  It will be held at Gaia Motel in Anderson and the food and wine will be spectacular!  Our Association motto is to Promote North State Wines so your attendance is in that spirit!  Contact me if you are interested in attending.

You might want to attend the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium in Sacramento, CA during January 25 – 27, 2012.  It is the largest event of its kind in the western hemisphere and hosts a trade show with over 650 suppliers displaying their products and services to the more than 12,200 people who attend annually!  For more information visit the Unified Wine & Grape Symposium home page on-line to see links for advance registration and the new parking location in Downtown Plaza West Garage which has $5 per car/day and free shuttle service from garage to Convention Center.

Enjoy the Winter while you can but keep in mind your Spring chores to prepare your vines for another fruitful year.

Cheers,

Greg Butler
